TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

Total Shoulder Replacement: Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, And Treatment

The shoulder joint is considered among the most complex joints found in the body. This joint has a great range of motion as compared to any other joint. The shoulder joint is a ball and socket type of joint which consists of bones, cartilages, muscles, and tendons. All these are affected to the differing degrees of various types of arthritis. Arthritis is a condition of the joint lining which is degenerative by nature, and it occurs when the lining gets torn by the regular wear and tear of the joint surface.

Why opt for a Total shoulder replacement?

Chronic shoulder pain is one of the most common reasons why people go for shoulder replacement surgeries, and these issues occur related to the age of the patient. Chronic shoulder pain or loss of shoulder movement is usually a progressive disease and cannot be revered. The good thing about it is that for some people this process can be very slow and these people will not have to go under the scissors for their condition.

During the early stages of this problem, anti-inflammatory medications, physiotherapy, and a decrease in the physical workload relieve the symptoms of arthritis. As the time passes, pain begins to increase, and stiffness becomes unbearable which is a big sign that people go for shoulder replacement procedures.

After the surgery, the damaged shoulder parts are surgically removed, and they are replaced with the artificial shoulder parts known as prostheses.

Signs and Symptoms

1. Fractures
When you get a severe injury, the head of the arm bone has the tendency to get damaged in such a way that it cannot be restored and which requires a replacement. Keeping the health of the clavicle in mind, the surgeons must recommend for a partial or entire shoulder replacement to change the broken bone, fix the joint, and restore the joint functioning.

2. Arthritis on the shoulder joint
Most of the people above the age of 50 get into the arthritic problems where the condition eventually increases stiffness and pain levels in the shoulder joint. This occurs because the protective cartilage of the shoulder gets damaged over the years of functioning. The doctor might advise you on an anti-inflammatory medication, but if the medication is given along with non-surgical treatment options, they do not relieve you from the pain or provide mobility.
This might result in taking help from the advantages of total shoulder replacement procedures. The most common type of problem because of which patients get this surgery done is osteoarthritis.

3. Tearing in the Rotator cuff
The tear in the rotator cuff happens when a patient gets an injury in one of the four muscles that cover itself around the higher portion of the arm bone. These muscles help in providing stability to the shoulder joint, and if the long-term tears are left untreated, it can lead to severe arthritis.

Treatment for Total shoulder replacement

• Some standard x-rays are taken to evaluate the condition of the shoulder joint in details. CT scan and an MRI are the necessary examinations that are required for the better diagnosis of the condition.
• Patients with nerve damages need to go for the EMG or the Nerve Conduction tests as well.
• The patients are suggested to get the steroid injections for the chronic conditions of arthritis, to begin with, the Total shoulder replacement surgical procedures.
• In some cases of chronic arthritic conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, total shoulder replacement can be helpful to improve the functioning of the shoulder and the arm.

Total shoulder replacement or arthroplasty is an effective and advantageous surgical procedure that can be done by patients with severe shoulder pain to reduce the pain and restore the mobility of the arms like before. In some cases, the non-operative measures like medication, gentle physiotherapy, and injections are helpful before decide on to the surgery.
