Total knee replacement (also known as Total Knee Arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure that is done to remove a severely impaired knee cartilage and then replace it with an artificial joint. The surgery is done to relieve pain and restore function to the joint.
Total knee replacement becomes necessary when other treatments fail to relieve arthritis-linked knee pain. The surgery is the last option when even medicines, injections, exercises, physical therapies, and weight loss programs could not relieve the pain. The purpose of TKR is to improve knee function so that patients can live a better quality of life.
Causes and symptoms
Total knee replacement can be done for all adults. The surgery is for those patients whose knee joints are damaged by arthritis, trauma, or other joint diseases.
TKR is fit for people who experience increasing pain and stiffness in the knee which hampers their daily function. Anyone can benefit from the procedure no matter what is the cause behind the damage to the joint except infection.
A total knee replacement is a procedure that has both benefits as well as risks, so it’s better to understand them before consenting to the operation. Pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the legs that may reach up to the lungs) is one of the major risks of TKR which can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and even shock.
Some of the other risks of TKR include infection of the knee, chronic knee pain & stiffness, nerve damage, urinary tract infection, blood vessel injury etc.
A total knee replacement procedure usually takes around one hour and it starts with an incision over the front of the knee joint. The knee joint is then exposed, the muscles and ligaments around it are reflected and then the kneecap is turned out of its place.
The surgeon in Faridabad will then remove the worn surfaces within the joint and reshape the ends of the bones. After that, specialized bone cement is used to attach to the bone ends the parts of the artificial knee joint, and then a proper fitting is achieved.
The surgeon will reposition the muscles and ligaments, and if needed, readjust (only the ligaments) to ensure the proper knee function. Once the procedure is done, the surgeon will insert a drainage tube to drain excess fluid out of the new joint. And then stitches are used to close the layers of tissue and skin, and a dressing is put around the knee.
To prevent infection in the new joint, antibiotics may also be given during and after the procedure. If necessary, blood transfusion can also be needed. You can trust Dr. Yuvraj Kumar a Top Total Knee Replacement Surgeon in Faridabad, Delhi NCR for desired results with a total knee replacement.
